Festive Feature: Got That Christmas Feeling by Lizzi Thomasson

‘Christmassy’ is a word that, to me at least, has come to take on more and more significance with each year. From mid-November we seem to ask each other almost daily if we feel Christmassy yet, but it is only in December that the feeling really starts to creep over us.
As the Christmas songs, films and TV adverts start to appear, we remember previous Christmas celebrations and the excitement we felt – and we start to say we feel a bit Christmassy and share this with our loved ones. But what does it mean to feel Christmassy? It’s that feeling in your tummy, it’s pure excitement. Memories of last year and the sheer thrill of presents we got when we were seven comes back to us and we get all geared up and excited again for this year; and so we should.
“Christmas is a time of year to be with the people you love and get really excited about food, mushy films, big jumpers and presents; lots and lots of presents.”
Regardless of religion, Christmas is a time of year to be with the people you love and get really excited about food, mushy films, big jumpers and presents; lots and lots of presents. Childhood memories mean that presents still generate more excitement than a few DVDs and a bit of Topshop jewellery should warrant, but it is a reliving of that excitement felt upon waking and seeing the red felt stocking at the foot of the bed – of seeing the pile of presents under the tree and just dying to know which ones were for you and what they were.
Even if our presents don’t make us squeal and jump up and down like they used to, the fact that we get them is still pretty brilliant and you can’t help but feel the love when you receive them. In fact, that’s what makes me feel so Christmassy – my excitement comes from anticipation of food and presents, yes, but mostly from the prospect of seeing all my friends and family much more often than normal and just being happy to be together. Everyone knows Christmas is a time for family and so much more effort is made to get together and we seem to appreciate each other that much more.
The love of our friends and family, happy memories, and excitement about what is to come; these things seem to make us feel really Christmassy.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!
